Why are fence panels better than nets?
Ten years ago, many fences were based on mesh. Today, panels dominate - and for good reason. They are stiff, look neater, keep their shape for years and do not require tensioning. The price is not dramatically higher.
Types of panels - what do the parameters mean?
Wire thickness
- 3 mm: light, for temporary or internal fences
- 4 mm: standard for permanent property fences
- 5–6 mm: for industrial facilities, construction sites
Mesh size
- 50×100 mm: most common, good compromise
- 50×200 mm: larger meshes, cheaper - approx. for less demanding applications
Standard heights
- 1.2 m: fence between plots, vegetable gardens
- 1.5 m: standard for single-family house properties
- 2.0 m: where privacy or security is important
Posts - round or square?
- Round (dia 48 or fi 60 mm): cheaper, lighter
- Square (40×40 or 60×60 mm): more stable, holds clamps better
- Spacing: standard 2–2.5 m - more and the panels may bend in the wind
- Post length: burial depth min. 1/3 - for 2 m above the ground, use a 3 m pole
Foundation - is it necessary?
- Poured concrete: the most durable, eliminates the gap at the ground
- Prefabricated: faster assembly, aesthetic appearance, easy replacement
- None: sufficient for temporary fences or level ground
Step by step assembly
- Marking out: string along the fence line, mark the positions of the posts every 2.0–2.5 m
- Drilling: hole Ø150 mm, depth min. 80 cm (below the frost line)
- Setting the posts: pour B15 concrete, check the vertical, leave for 48 hours
- Foundation: after setting the concrete under the posts
- Panel installation: clamps screwed to the posts
- Wicket and gate: assembly at the end, after leveling
Approximate prices
- Panel 1.5 m × 2.5 m, 4 mm wire: approx. PLN 35-55/piece
- Steel post 2.5 m, diameter 48: approx. PLN 25-40/piece
- The whole thing with foundation and assembly: approx. PLN 150-250/m
Panel vs. mesh vs. rails
- Panel: durable, quick installation, modern look - a good choice for 9 out of 10 properties
- Mesh: the cheapest, requires tensioning, less aesthetic
- Wooden rails: traditional look, high privacy, more expensive and require maintenance
A fence panel will work for the vast majority of applications. If privacy is a priority - consider solid panels or combine the panel with a hedge.
