Before you buy a hammock - a few things worth knowing
Last summer I hung a hammock between two birch trees on the plot. Four months have passed and I can say one thing: it was one of the best purchases in recent years. But before I found this particular model, I spent some time wandering around stores and ordering various things online. This is what I got out of it.
Freestanding or suspended? It depends on one thing
The first question is: do you have somewhere to hang it? If there are two trees on the plot, 3-5 meters apart - you are lucky. If not, you either buy a hammock for the terrace or invest in a frame.
Free-standing hammock (with frame)
- You can place it literally anywhere - on concrete, on the terrace, on sand
- It is easier to move it to a sunny or shaded place
- Usually more expensive than the hammock itself without a frame
- Painted steel vs aluminum - the former is more solid, but rusts if stored carelessly
- Check the maximum load capacity of the frame - standard 120-150 kg, but it is worth looking at 200 kg
Hanged hammock (between trees or posts)
- The cheapest option, because you only pay for the hammock
- Rolls better - more natural movement
- Requires two solid mounting points approximately 3-5 m apart
- Hang on hooks with bands (not on nails - damages the bark)
- Suspension height: approx. 1.2–1.5 m from the ground
Materials - what to choose?
Cotton - classic
A cotton Brazilian hammock is my favorite solution. It breathes well, fits softly, does not hurt your back. Disadvantage: it does not like moisture - after rain it needs to be dried and stored in a dry place. It molds faster than synthetic materials.
Nylon and polyester - for all weather
Nylon string hammocks work better if you forget to take them off at night. They dry quickly and don't get moldy. Less pleasant to the touch at high temperatures.
Canvas
Wide, flat hammocks made of thick fabric - perfect for sleeping or lying down for long periods. A little heavier, but super comfortable. I recommend it to families with children.
What else should you pay attention to when purchasing?
- Load capacity: minimum 150 kg for one person, 200 kg if two people use
- Length: Standard hammocks are 200-220 cm - choose longer than your height
- Width: 120 cm for one person, 160–180 cm for a couple
- Fittings and cables: check carabiners and hooks - they should be made of steel, galvanized
Care and storage
- After the season, dismantle and wash at 30°C (cotton) or cold water (synthetic)
- Dry thoroughly before folding
- Store in a cloth bag in a dry place
- Check cables and fittings for corrosion every season
Where to hang it to actually rest?
- A shady place in the afternoon - in full sun you will burn instead of rest
- Use protective belts (min. 5 cm wide) - a thin rope cutting into the bark destroys the tree
- Check the load-bearing capacity of the branches - a hammock with a person is a significant dynamic load
A good hammock will last 10 years without any problems - provided you choose the right material for your conditions and store it for the winter.
